Rima and I enjoyed walking about and seeing the various flower blooming on Balboa Island in the Newport Beach area of Southern California today. Please let me know if you want to come visit southern California to escape snow, ice and so forth.

Re: November storms. On Thanksgiving day in 1950 my mother took me to the new house about 30 miles NE of Pittsburgh. My father was to join us after he finished work at 4:30 PM. The day had started out with heavy rain which quickly turned to snow. We made it to the new house as it continued to snow. I was told later that it took my father about three hours to make the trip from work, normally a 1/2-hour drive. When the snow stopped by Sunday, some locations had as much as 36" of snow.

Our weather lately has been incredible! Low '80's, no wind, low humidity, tough to go back into the house until sunset.

Around here if it's 80 degrees it means swarms of mosquito's and other biting insects. But, today it's only 20 degrees out and the air is clear of bugs.
Not too cold to go outside and find dead trees that are good for heating (that rules certain types of trees) and that's what I did all day yesterday. Once it got dark I split what I had already cut into blocks 21" long.
At this moment I'm warm and cozy because of my efforts yesterday :-)
It's good that I have a decent supply of firewood because out propane tank is down to 20% and that won't last long in the next week. Propane, right now, is being held back until the farmers get their crops dried.

SUMMARY...A band of moderate to heavy snow is expected to persist through the afternoon. Snowfall rates up to 1 inch per hour are expected.

It's said that firewood warms you twice, once when you cut and split it and then when you burn it.

Well the first wave of this cold front came through and finished off the rest of the nice foliage that really had just begun to be pretty. Wind shifted, picked up gusts to 40-50 km/h. Temp was up to 18°C this morning, but in about 30-45 minutes dropped to 3°C with forecast low tonight of -3°. Spent most of the day fixing up places for the animals in the neighborhood, since they invade the spaces of my own pets. The rain was forecast to be 100%, and it did rain but only lightly, and continues. Most of the heavier showers developed to my SE. Colder than average for this date.

Supposed to be around 80 here today. Still no rain which is concerning as there's been none since April. Last year it rained a lot. Hopefully we're not heading back into drought which means out again with 5 gallon buckets in the shower.

Yes, I also hope Winter this year has a much rain as last year.
It is sad to see the Sacramento River water wasted, flowing into the ocean.

Releases from Shasta Dam to the Sacramento River are 5000 CFS down from 15000 CFS through the summer and just about as low as ever. There are no opportunities to store Sacramento River water downstream of Shasta Dam. Much of the river flow downstream is agricultural drainage with high levels of phosphate.

An interesting winter outlook, hope it is a mild winter...

Quote:
SUMMARY

Most forecasts are showing certain lower pressure in the North Atlantic, and higher pressure over Europe and USA, which means generally milder winter. The forecasts are on the same trend since September, which is very rare. These forecasts are an average picture over 3 months (Dec-Jan-Feb) and show the general prevailing weather pattern. In Europe, some winter weather is still possible generally, especially if the prevailing high pressure over Europe can create a temperature inversion with fog and cold air pooling in the lowlands, creating an artificial winter. Across the Atlantic, models generally agree on potential northerly flows over NW and NE USA and E Canada, while central USA currently has lower chances for winter weather overall. These forecasts don’t mean that this how the weather will be 3-months straight, but just show the dominant pattern idea. There can still be bypassing cold fronts and snowfall in USA or Europe (during weather pattern re-adjustments), just not in the usual amounts.
