There are two ways to add one or more photos to your post.

The first (preferred) is by using the "Upload attachment" feature when you compose your post. Right below the input text box, if you scroll down slightly, is the "Upload attachment" section.

Filename > click on Choose File.
Navigate to the file you want to add on your computer. Click Choose.
That file name will replace the "no file selected" next to the Choose File button.
Immediately below that is File Comment where you can add an optional comment to accompany the image.
Click Add the file. A popup window will appear (unless you have disabled them in your browser) telling you the file upload is in progress. This window will close when the upload is finished.

Your photo(s) will appear at the bottom of whatever text you post. They will be listed by file name immediately below the bottom of the post text input box. You can put them in specific places in your text by moving the cursor to where you want one to be and click the Place inline button.

The previous file dimension and file size limitations have been eliminated. The server will now take large images and create a smaller thumbnail image and display that. Clicking on the thumbnail will open the original image, in the original size, in your browser window.

Although the size restrictions have been eliminated, be aware that uploading a really large image may be sluggish as the server processes the image. Using smaller images, when possible, will alleviate this.

This uploaded image is 5472 pixels wide and 3648 pixels high:

The other way to insert a photo is to link to an image that is somewhere on the web. You place the URL to the image between [img] and [/img] tags like this:

[img]https://some domain.com/image.jpg[/img]

Please keep in mind that linking to extremely large images will create issues for some people and some browsers, forcing them to scroll horizontally to read posts.

Note: the linked file must be a JPG, GIF, TIFF, or BMP file and end with the appropriate extension.

Also note: To stop spammers, this method is blocked to new users in their first post. The attachment process is available.

This is great news! Thank you Alan!

I wouldn't call the resizing process painful as I will still do it, along with cropping, rotating, adjusting levels and tweaking the image to look its best.

This helps allow larger images with more detail to be seen :D

Alan;
Good move--thank you!!

Is there any change to the constraints on new members?

I would still encourage people not to make images larger than they need to be. I'm in Steve's camp in that I routinely edit, crop, etc. before posting a picture

Alan,

Yippee!

I copied, snipped, spliced, cropped, compressed and changed to 2-bit gray scale an Eveready 21 schematic.

All of an hour so I could get the greatest detail in the schematic as possible for the thread:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=365513

Now I can just crop and post!

On schematics I forgive myself if one has to scroll, but since I no longer have a place to post images direct upload is the only option.

Thanks!

Chas

I clicked on your image, and saved it. It was no longer your original dimensions (5472 by 3648), it was only 1200 by 800.

It doesn't seem to be working correctly for me.

I just tried the first (preferred) method to enter an image sized 1200 by 872 pixels and it would not work. It still told me my image was too large, that 1000 by 1000 was the upper limit. I got this message:

Attachment:
too large.jpg
too large.jpg [ 90.12 KiB | Viewed 6597 times ]

And the image (986 by 192 pixels) above when added and placed inline is now way too small to read without clicking on it to enlarge it, whereas before I would crop an image to fit the old dimension limit, upload it through the first (preferred) method, place it inline, and it would appear in it's original size (very readable).

Am I doing something wrong?

Try deleting all cookies and history related to ARF.

Thanks, Chas. Just tried, and still the same. Alan's picture still displays and saves as 1200 by 800 (not 5472 by 3648) and I still get blocked by the 1000 by 1000 pixel limit when trying to upload an image.

Sounds great, Alan! But it also raises some questions in my mind:

    1) What target size are images resized to for display in a thread? Is that different from the max size that can be displayed in a thread?

    2) What is the max size of images that will be stored on the server?

    3) If I continue to resize my own images to be within 800x800, do they get further resized on upload? It looks to me like your smaller image above is probably less than 800x800.

Thanks for all your hard work keeping the forum up-to-date!
Rodney

Are any of you able to download and save Alan's picture from the first post at 5472 pixels wide and 3648 pixels high? I've tried opening it in other browsers and incognito ones and still only get a 1200 by 800 image.

Well Alan, I appreciate your efforts, but when I just went to test this, I got;

Quote:
The image must be at least 0 pixels wide, 0 pixels high and at most 1000 pixels wide and 1000 pixels high. The submitted image is 1200 pixels wide and 900 pixels high.

So in this case at least, there is still a file size limitation, although it's now 1000 pixels per side, vs the 800 that it used to be.

Additionally, when I posted a file within the 800 pixel limitation, it was reproduced in a smaller size, with the clickable feature to enlarge it. Frankly I'm not too sure I like the change.

I've tweaked the numbers a bit, however I'm not sure it made any difference. My biggest challenge is testing things out, as the internet connection on my computer is virtually unusable (which is why I do nearly everything on a Smartphone).

Testing with a 3265 by 2373 image. It took this size as an upload without complaint, and gives a "thumbnail" at 800 wide. Clicking the image opens a 1200 pixel wide image which must be the maximum your setup currently allows.
