Initially it was cloudy here but now is just a slight haze. As I write this Mercury is about halfway across the sun seen through my telescope. (8 inch Meade S-C)

Unusual thing about this is we have a celestial event and it's not clouded over!

Sounds great!

Complete overcast here.

Light, high clouds here but no problem to see the transit. Here on the West coast I had to wait until the sun was above the treeline, which was about 9AM. Had a great view through the 60mm 'scope. As it happens one of the grand kids, 5 years old, is up visiting and he got to see it too. Typical 5 YO reaction: Wow! Cool! Then he was off in a flash on to the next thing. He had more fun the night before when we were explaining what was going to happen with a bright light and balls.

Personally, I quite enjoyed it!

Glad you got to enjoy the sky show with your Grandson!
Very good that you took the time to help him understand what he was seeing, as well!

Complete overcast and snow here.

I did, however, see both transits of Venus, including the one that ended
when the sun had risen only one solar diameter above the horizon here.

MAny many years ago I saw a transit of Mercury.

If you want transits, those of the moons of Jupiter are a dime a dozen.

I have seen a transit of Mercury before, long ago!

It was indeed special to share it with the grandson. He has been up for 10 days and we have been having a great time. His parents do a fantastic job of limiting screen time and setting boundaries. I like to think we had something to do with that. 8) Anyway, he is a good kid, bright, curious and (mostly) well behaved. Maybe there is hope for the future!

There is indeed hope.

venus and Jupiter were absolutely gorgeous in the WSW in the fading deep blue twilight.

they will be getting closer to each other this week.

y'all have me wanting to get a telescope now .... last time I decided to do so, and started looking, the skies in Ohio were 100% cloud blocked for about 2 months straight. I am not making this up. I shelved the telescope project, and have not returned to it.

That said, have any of you astrologers .... errr astronomers.... considered that perhaps Mercury really DOES go backwards at times? Hmmmm????

Barry,

Get a telescope! You won't regret it. I have a few but the one that gets the most use is a simple 4" (60mm). The reason it gets the most use is that it is easy to set up and put away. It has provided fantastic views of many things and while bigger 'scopes are nice and I do set them up sometimes the simple 4" gets used all the time.
