My package went from Egg Harbor NJ to Newark NJ by way of Memphis TN.

From Egg Harbor to my house is about 100 miles.
So it traveled 2200 miles from Egg Harbor thru Memphis to Newark, a distance of about 100 miles from Egg Harbor,
and is still about 100 miles from my house.

Fedex central hub is in Memphis, almost all of their packages used to go through there. I think they added more hubs.

Yeah, but when a Fedex package comes this way from the Memphis hub it always goes to Lehigh Valley, not to Newark.

I sold/shipped something to a gent in Missouri (one state away, 150 miles) - it took ten days and at one point made it to Alaska.
On the up side, I can now say I've shipped to 49 states!

It has now gone backwards to Lehigh Valley, where it should have gone in the first place. Oh well.

If I remember correctly, the original concept was a simple "brute force" solution:
--1 hub, and therefore only one place that requires equipment and people to do sorting.
--simple procedures: Any package given to FedEx goes to the hub. This means the local offices only have to deal with collection money, handing the package to a driver, and maybe offering materials and services for packing.
ifi
In a system like this, what counts is the "net" or "average" efficiency. The obvious inefficiency for a few packages simply does not matter. The company meets customer expectations while maximizing profit. Everyone is happy until a better solution arrives.....

For me, the current paradigm of interest is the totally distributed system---eg Amazon. It is still amazing to me how quickly they can deliver certain kinds of things.

I suspect that one huge difference is that "mail order" is now taking a lot of business from "brick and mortar", meaning that instant gratification is more important.
"drive to the store vs. waiting 3 days for FedEx"
Or:
"drive to the store vs. waiting just 12-18 hours for Amazon"

I have a lot of things that I buy where a 1 week delivery is just fine.

Use the free ship/ prepaid option at Digi-Key, and the bets are all over the place. Panasonic Caps, three different warehouses, 6 weeks delivery. But two Bourns pots, next-day air. FREE.

I don't care as long as I get them. I paid for shipping once at D-K and got them via UPS on time, otherwise, I like FREE.
