I recently viewed a really clean one, it is nice inside and out. It would need new caps, a dial string, and rubber wire replacement. The cabinet is excellent as is. The chassis is the not hardly dusty.

IF I got it I would be selling a Silvertone R111 to make room. The Silvertone is refinished as new and electronically restored to 100%. On the other hand, the Zenith is a common radio. I read it has excellent sound. Would it be worth my time to do the work on the Zenith to replace the Silvertone?

The Zenith phono? I have no use for a 78 phonograph. The cartridge is probably bad and uobtanioum anyway. I am toying with the idea of installing a modern turntable. Is the possible from an electronic comparability standpoint? Is it a stupid idea that makes me a jerk for suggesting it in the first place?

I suppose it boils down to which one you like better :D

The Zenith will be a great sounding radio once restored.
The phono input is compatible with any more modern ceramic cartridge.
You could use a magnetic cartridge with a pre-amp.

Id be interested in the old changer if it doesn't have pot metal issues.

Naw, its all good. Your not a jerk for suggesting it!

If I understand right you want a record player, just not the one the Zenith comes with?. I would be tempted to look into adding a phono input to the Silvertone. While the 10S690 is a high tube count Zenith it's not a particularly desirable one, few of the phono consoles are. Comparing the two, I'd keep the Silvertone. Just my $.02, YMMV.

I can't say the Silvertone is a particularly desirable one either.

True. Essentially it's a wash. although I like the looks of the Silvertone better. The way I look at it is, since they're a wash is it worth all the work, including all that lovely rubber wiring, for a wash if the Silvertone is already restored? Again, just my $.02.

True, the rubber wire is a royal pain.

I guess I'm a little partial to the 1942 Zeniths as my first Zenith console was a 8-S-661.
I was so impressed with the sound quality of it!

Anyhow, its really up to Scot as to what he wants. :D

Yeah, the only console in my living room is a 1942 Zenith 10S669 I restored several years ago.
