Greetings to the Forum:

I learned a bit of Latin the other day. I learned that the Latin word for baggage is impedimentia. Now that gave me an idea. Up to now, we have used the same unit (ohms) for both DC and AC resistance. But I propose that we should keep ohms for DC, but change the units for AC in keeping with the Latin.

Therefore, for small values of impedance (less than 1000 ohms) we should use the term "valise". Therefore, we would speak of 50 valise transmission line or 600 valise audio circuits. As we grow larger in value, instead of using the prefix K, we could simply graduate to "suitcases". Therefore, impedances greater than 1000 valises would be given as N suitcases, for example the old 2.7K ohms would become 2.7 suitcases.

For impedances greater than 1 meg, we could use "steamer trunks". Therefore 1 Megohm would become 1 steamer trunk.

And now that you have had your pun for the day (what my daughters would call a "Dad joke"), I shall quietly steal away.... :D

Regards,

Just out of curiosity, how many ohms could pack in a suitecase?

On eBay they have Teraohm resistors, so I would imagine quite a few! :D

Steamer trunk has to many letters and words. "Duffel" would be better!

Back in college, my Physics professor called on me to answer, "what are the units of resistance"? I promptly said, "ummm, its...", and he said yes! The units are ohms! I always thought it was legit but now me thinks it was a well conceived ruse on his part.

I was tickled by the scene in a Hammer Horror movie 1968 where Christopher Lee bursts into Latin to defeat the powers of darkness. He stated the phrase must never be repeated unless your very soul is at stake.

It's all Greek, to me.

Duffel should be applied only in military applications. Seabag would apply to Navy and Marine use.
