This Gateway Essential 700S desktop with Windows XP arrived a couple of days ago, and it was an eBay purchase. Upon startup, the computer does begin to boot up, but is shortly interrupted by this message (as can be seen from the photo). Well, I tried to restart Windows normally as recommended by the message, but the computer only reboots again, and then I'm back to this same message.

I'm thinking that I should reinstall Windows, but before I do anything, I would like some suggestions. Thanks.

Default to bios when powering up. See if there are any bios issues or settings that do not agree. Check the bios battery while your at it...

If not try a windows rescue disc if no joy in the bios.

Look for any leaking or swollen caps on the mother board... If you have a substitute power supply, try that...

If it were me I would open it up and make sure that the memory cards are seated properly, then I would remove any cards that are inside, sound card, modem card, whatever else except the video card ( you will need that ) and then reboot, if it reboots and you get a splash screen, then you have a bad card causing the issue. Put them back in one at a time and repeat your boot process to figure out what card might be causing the problem. Hope this helps.

Open it up and make sure all cards are seated and try again. If that doesn't work, try the "Last known good configuration" option.
Last, try Safe Mode with networking.

The BIOS battery checked out okay, and I didn't notice any bulges on the electrolytic capacitors on the mother board. I'll check the board seating and such now.

Let's not forget the fact that this no doubt has an old hard drive with lots of hours on it, and might be failing. On a drive that's on it's way out, it's not uncommon for boot sector files to be lost or corrupted.

I would try safe mode next

Try the last known good option.

If that does not work a windows reinstall is your choice

Okay, I removed the video card, the audio card, and the RAMBUS cards. Before I inserted each card back, I sprayed the socket with Radio Shack cleaner and lubricant for good measure. Next, I'll try the last known good option after I boot up the machine (after I clean up the dirty cooling fan on the motherboard, and the fan on the power supply).

Okay. I reseated all of the boards, cleaned up the cooling fans and checked connections. When I plugged in the desktop afterwards, this is now what appears.

Edit: Okay, I set the time and date in the BIOS, and tried the last known good configuration, but to no avail.

This is how the BIOS appeared before I changed the time and date.

It's telling you the Cmos battery is bad, I would change that first, then use the default setings in the BIOS to start.

The other message looks like Windows is corrupted. I forget how to get into recovery mode with XP, but if you can do that, and have an XP disc you may be able to recover without a complete reinstall, though that's probably the better option.

Where it now appears in Safe Mode (as seen in the previous photo), could I try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 at that point?

It won't accept the sfc/scannow command. Actually, it stated: Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.

I bought a HP Compaq d530 CMT desktop years ago which had Windows XP installed and one day I could not boot up the computer. After trying to boot up the computer in safe mode, I used a rescue disk, which didn't work either. Although I had the Windows XP software license, I did not get the software CDs when I purchased the computer, so I took the Windows XP CD from a Dell Dimension 4700G desktop I bought back in 2003 and was able to get the Compaq computer working. I figured I had nothing to lose as the Compac didn't work anyway and can say that both desktops still work today, although I use a Windows 10 laptop and iPad whenever I go onto the internet when security is required.

I tried that as administrator, but again, this came up: Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.

Try opening My Computer, right click on the C: drive and see if it'll run the error check.
Another option is to create a start disk on floppy and run chkdisk from outside Windows.
If you can't create a Floppy there are places you can download it.
