this is XP, NTFS (not quick) format during the installation of a fresh copy of XP.

it takes about an hour to completely format a 320 gb IDE HDD.

it takes much less time to format a 160 or a 250.

One issue that I might have with the Gateway Essential 700S desktop computer is the memory, but it sort of appears that I can't expand it beyond what is already there. I mean, it's all full. What appears in the photo are two silver RAM cards and two green ones. Incidentally, this is RAMBUS memory.

There doesn't seem to be any provisions for additional RAMBUS memory unless those two green cards that are adjacent to those RAMBUS cards can be removed. Maybe I'll take a better look, and see what I got in there.

i have seen "blank" rambus cards in sockets.

the top two might be blanks.

they have no chips, just a "dummy stick".

i have some of those too, i think.

anyone know why they put blank dummy rambus sticks in sockets ?

to eliminate noise on an empty socket ?

What is on one of the RAMBUS cards is this:

Korea 0119 256MB/16 ECC

MR18R082GBN1-CK8QO 800-45

P/N 402835-862

4A0165

Edit: Those two green cards are just blanks.

The dummy modules are called CRIMMs. They have to be in there or it won't boot. If you replace the dummy modules in Bank 1, they must match the speed of the two in Bank 0. They must be added by pairs and contain the same memory size and speed in that bank. Bank 0 can have a different memory size than Bank 1 though (all 4 have to be the same speed).

here is the rambus memory that i have.

i have NO idea if it will work in your application.

you will have to ask someone on here.

one says it is ECC

the two white ones came in a pair, the blue one is by itself.

let me know if you want them and we can work something out.

steve

IMHO the two silver colored RAM sticks appear to have "similar" specification I think they would work in the Gateway. Check the pin count and the location of the notch as well as the Nano seconds I was unable to confirm. Most ram will work if all the parameters agree, the bios will protest if it does not or the machine will just turn on and have a black screen...I have never experienced ram bricking a machine permanently nor have I seen the reverse but I have experienced bad ram.

I simply compared with vendors the two numbers...

Korea 0119 256MB/16 ECC
MR18R082GBN1-CK8QO 800-45
P/N 402835-862
4A0165

VS

Korea 0243H 256MB/8 ECC << That maybe chip density.
MR16R1628AF0CM8 800-40

I have a couple of pounds of ram that I do not have machines for so I would like that to go away at some time. Unfortunately none of the ram I have has metal jacketed heat sinking :(

Found this, no guarantee that it is accurate for your bios, to big to copy to ARF:

Gateway Bios beep list...

send me a pm and add to this thread if you decide to get my rambus ram.

i know absolutely nothing about it, its specs, or use in your application.

all i can offer is the ram, no knowledge, lol.

The silver modules don't have ECC (error correcting code) but the ones in the Gateway Bank 0 have it. They still might work though. At start up, the BIOS should see that and disable ECC.
Too bad there's not another blue one. Also verify the edge connector in the photos matches yours.

Pictured is one of the RAMBUS 800-45 modules inside the Gateway Essential 700S desktop computer. I don't know; I might opt to get a couple of RAMBUS 800-45 out of eBay as they're relatively cheap enough, and to avoid any potential conflicts with the operating system.

I ordered a couple of RAMBUS 800-45 ECC modules from eBay for $11.61 total which wasn't too bad. Thanks Dutch Rabbit for looking though!

This area of MB has seen rusty water dripping on to it, you're lucky it functions at all.

Now that you mentioned it, a section of the computer case bottom was indeed rusted. Actually, I was wondering how that water managed to get in there in the first place. Perhaps it was one of the survivors of Hurricane Katrina?

I received the two Samsung RAMBUS 800-45 modules in yesterday's mail, and I installed them last night. With that, I now have 1.0 gbit of RAM memory in the Gateway Essential 700S desktop computer. Later on today, I might decide to upgrade the Internet Explorer 8 that is currently in the computer, and perhaps try to install an anti virus program as well.
