The wayback machine at archive.org has not saved the content of threads.

Just me, probably. :)

That's a great explanation Bob, unfortunately I didn't understand a single word of it. lol

Essentially, your hosts file is a local DNS lookup table. Your OS checks this file first, before going to a DNS server to look up a URL. So, if your hosts file has an entry for a particular URL (eg. theradioboard.com), then it uses the IP address that's in the hosts file, and skips the DNS server lookup.

The first post about this made sense to me.

Names are just easier to remember. So type in antiqueradios.com and your browser connects to a site that translates the name into an IP address. Yiu could always go directly by entering that IP address, but who can remember?

Your computer checks the host file automatically, so if there's a suitable entry, it doesn't have to go to a name server.

I remember years ago some problem where I couldn't connect with a site. But for some reason I had the IP address, so I just put that number in my browser, and all was fine.

Fresh email from N2DS. He is on this one and hopes TRB will be up tomorrow.

KR1S seems to be AWOL for now.

That only works if the site has a dedicated IP address. If it's a shared host site like TheRadioBoard, then the site's host doesn't have enough information to direct you to the correct site. Under normal conditions, this isn't a problem, because when your browser requests a site with the URL, it creates an HTTP Get command with the URL which is converted to the IP address either by the hosts file or the DNS server, but the Get command also contains the original URL as well. So, the remote server can use that to send you to the correct site.

How would you determine the actual IP address of theradioboard.com? That should bypass confused DNS servers.

I just ran a trace on theradioboard.com and got the following:

Bob Weavers "fix" works great. I'm not sure how many people have applied it; whenever I log in to TRB it says I'm the only user.

It starts out at "DonsDellXPS0700" hits his router, goes through a bunch of Windstream routers. hits 99.83.92.188 and there is no response after that.

I'm getting different results after adding TRB to my host file. One hop, 6ms.

I don't "Face", it's just a step above USENET.

I take little from YoutuBe except for entertainment...

I'm sure TRB will return, however, it may comeback with a different name and URL, IMHO the name may be held for ransom... in the days coming we shall know...
