You cannot delete a post.
If it bugs you that much, ask a moderator to remove it.

You can change the title of the thread by editing your first post.
Insert something like PLEASE REMOVE and someone will see it.
Greg.

That is correct. Only sysadmin and the mods can delete.
It's not something they do casually and you can expect to have to provide a good reason for doing so.

I think that it's a mandatory fine of twenty bucks for a first offense.

The few I have wanted to delete a post, I just edit to say, "Self deleted." and maybe say why?

You can delete the contents of the original post but not the actual post.

When you delete the original post contents, you can't save the post without some sort of content in the subject field and the text field, like an asterisk or a letter.

Deleting the contents of the first post in a topic that you have started is a slap in the face to other members who have taken the time to post replies to your topic. It's OK if no one has replied yet.

If you decided that you did not want to post on something already running and felt that your was not relevant. You can delete the contents but write delete & perhaps why & if a moderator spots it it will go. If you accidently, or there is a hiccup and a duplicate, you can delete content & write duplicate, either way it is likely to be spotted.

I would agree that common courtesy to responders should apply. You cannot really un-ring a struck bell.

PM to a moderator of the particular category, as suggested is an option.

Marc

I started this post because I posted a question, and then found the answer, so I wanted to delete it before anybody replied.

In this case, I think it would be better to show your answer.
This would serve the ARF community since posts can live on forever and add to the school of knowledge.

Unless of course the answer was truly embarrassing.

Even those are helpful.

Proverb: Show me a person who has never made a mistake; and I will show you a liar.

We all make mistakes and oversight's, & occasionally say things that we may regret, for its interpretation.

If you have realised you did not explain it well, or post that you found the issue (As noted: Your bad may enlighten another) and post that, the post will die of natural causes & we all move on: Viz "Next item".

So true, Marc. So many different things are discussed here.
