Ran across this link and thought others may also find it interesting. After seeing how this sound was created in the video I recalled that I'd discovered this sound very long ago as a youngster quite by accident when I had struck a long taught guy wire with a hard stick. At the time I must have spent five minutes hitting that wire making the sound because it was just so cool. But enough time had passed that I had never connected it to the blaster sound being used in Star Wars until seeing this video.
In the comments section of the link a person allegedly employed with Star Wars sound effects at the time says this is exactly how the sound was made but that they used a Teflon hammer to reduce the harsher metal on metal sound heard in the video using a wrench.
