I realize this is generational for the most part and even a few years makes a huge difference. What I would have considered wouldn't have been what my parents thought or even my daughters who are both past their mid 30's this year. The chasm of 8 years that my niece was whom we raised from 15-18 was astounding from my kids preferences, so music changes very quick. The few years of difference between my spouse and myself even show that difference. What music is significant to you?

I have very eclectic tastes so I can't limit my answer to a genre nor artist. There are also numerous types of emotion to be evoked by music.
Among the strongest emotions evoked by music was the song "Go Rest High On That Mountain" by Vince Gill.

"Hymne à l'amour" by Edith Piaf. It was written for the death of her lover Marcel Cerdan in an airplane crash while on his way to her. There are a number of her recordings capable of stirring emotion in the listener, especially if the listener understands what is behind the song. "La vie en rose" and "Non, je ne regrette rien" are two more.
"With Pen in Hand" by Vicki Carr is another.

As I've posted before it just depends on my mood. The other day it was Pavarotti at Madison Square Garden: O Sole Mio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5q7113ACWA 2:13 to 2:18 incredible Next it might be Gladys Knight & the Pips with Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me. My wifes and my song for us. Noone else should claim it as theirs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FT5QF4JZUANext it might be Hendrix @ Woodstock or Stevie Ray Vaughan 1989 Austin City Limits or Albert King then onto Buddy Rich. Guess that's what music is supposed to do for you. Get up and move you both emotionally and physically.

My Mom was a great lover of Johnny Mathis,It seemed like every time i was at her house she had his records on the turntable. So as I grew up his songs were always in my head. When she passed away in 2003 other members of the family didn't want the records, so i boxed them up and they are still with me. I haven't listened to them in years,Well the other day I was at my bench and listening to 50s on 5 (Sirius radio) Wonderful Wonderful came on and i had to pause because the tears were welling up.Its been awhile since I've had the records out maybe this is why.

The First Time Ever I saw Your Face, by Roberta Flack. First time I heard this song on the radio as I was driving around and I just had to pull over and listen to this. Around 1978 or so.

Look at it this way, music is a form of art. All art is emotional communication through a medium. Everyone will have different likes. I have to add Les McCann & Eddie Harris to the list. It's called, "Compared To What?". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qNJfVXxrQUCheers, Doug

The performance that thrills me every Christmas is playing the December 25, 1938 Paul Whiteman organized Experiments In Modern Music at Carnegie Hall. http://www.allmusic.com/album/carnegie- ... 0000349896It thrills me on several levels, it is a near Hi-Fi time machine into 1938, much of the music still sounds adventuresome, the fact that these people, 75 years ago, could do things that even in these jaded times can still trigger tears of joy on hearing their work every year. You can bet it is on my list for Xmas listening this December. Robert

Now that I'm getting older, "When I was seventeen" really gets to me.

I guess the one that stops me in my tracks is Bing Crosbys White Christmas. It takes me back to Christmas at my grandparents house in the 1950's.
