Joe Cocker did many covers of other artists songs, and look how well he did.

Paul Butterfield did "Mary, Mary" on East-West, it is likely more known than writer Mike Nesmith's version.
Every Laura Nero song you've likely heard was recorded by others, yet she recorded them first.
It''s really about who had success. There are lots of songs recorded by people that went nowhere, but we know the songs because others had more success with them I love both versions of "Respect" because they are soul done so well.

One remake I can do without is Michael Bolton 's version of "Sittin on the dock of the bay." He can pound sand for all I care. Another is "Ooo Baby,Baby" by Linda Ronstadt. I'll take the original thank you. You can't improve on the Mona Lisa, so why try? Same with Phil Collins. "Groovey Kind Of Love" and "You Can't Hurry Love" should be left to the original artists, whom I love. One song I always admired for being so incredibly well done is "Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey. The entire song, orchestra, singer, arrangement was superb! That's the kind of music I like hearing.

i guess one of the most significant examples is " I will always love you" Dolly Paton ( who wrote it )... her version compared to the great rearrangement for Whitney Houston
you really can't ever compare them... each has its own unique values... but Houston's version is "better" .... to me.

Perhaps I am missing something and I wondered what other members of the forum think about this.
Joseph The answer to this can only be subjective. How many people are posting in this thread? That's how many correct answers there will be.

Covers are ok, as long as the singer can make it their own without losing the essence of the song.

Sometimes it isn't so much that a cover is better or worse, it's just that some have an interesting vibe to them. We all know the Kingsmen's version of "Louie Louie" but there's something irresistible about the Toots & The Maytals version.

What band or group does that cover of "Hooked On A Feeling" with the weird noises instead of the original arrangement with the Vinnie Bell electric sitar and BJ Thomas, may he RIP? Never mind, I don't wanna know. It' a bad earworm, that one.
Elvis did some great covers, but mostly new songs as he was a super star and people brought their music to him. But there is one notable exception we discussed before - "Suspicion" by Terry Stafford sounds so much like Elvis, it's actually better than the Elvis original. The musical arrangement with the horns, background singers and the organ or is that an early synthesizer? all came together for that particular cover, and it was a major hit that still gets airplay.

I'm a sucker for Linda Ronstadt covers. Also Janis Joplin. One day a few months ago I heard the original "Cry" by Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters and was amazed.

Blue Suede did the "Hooked On A Feeling" remake. I hate that whole version and the stupid "Ooga chaka" beginning over and over again. The BJ Thomas version was great. Also loved "I Just Can't Help Believing " and "Eyes Of A New York Woman. "

The one song I wish Elvis had done is the Charlie Rich "Keep On Rolling With The Flow." That was a fantastic song and Charlie 's version was great.
