Is the Aretha Franklin "I Say a Little Prayer" not equal to the original version by Dionne Warwick, aunt of Whitney ( thnx, ZR! )? Many popular songs are covers, when you think about it.

Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Ian Thomas recorded "Hold On" in 1981. Listen for cool bass chops after Ian sings the high part.

The 1982 Santana cover stays true to the original, same tempo and intro, a bit more soulful but changes are subtle. Carlos holds back his signature guitar licks until the final bars, well done. Google it. Cheers.

Whitney Houston's mother's name was Cissy Houston. Dionne Warwick was her aunt. I like both versions, but Dionne's I like the best.

Louie, Louie is a good example of how a band can do a cover and "make it their own." I suspect very few people realize Louie, Louie was first written and performed in 1957 by Richard Berry (not related to Chuck):

Personally I'm on the fence with cover songs, but aside from Louie, Louie, in most cases I usually prefer the original.

Canned Heat did a pretty good, but seldom heard, cover of Wooly Bully.

I personally have Neil Diamond's cover of Mr. Bojangles along with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's cover, of Jerry Jeff Walker's song. Out of the three I think Diamonds is the best!

I've never heard that version before today, and while I like Aretha, I can't say I care for that cover.

Entirely subjective question. For me, covers are usually nowhere near as good but there are a few notable exceptions.

I find the mixing of the car horn effect in the original "Hot Rod Lincoln" to be obnoxious and very annoying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcCj4ogE-m8. The Commander Cody version is an improvement, but I much prefer the Asleep at the Wheel cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcNN2lSjcTg

I don't like this song at all but I think Keith Urban's cover of "Jeans On" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugCN9fhWnYc) is a lot better and more fitting than the original by David Dundas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwGlhKcEBjY)

Jackson Browne wrote "Take it Easy" but the Eagles recorded it before he did, so I'm not sure whose version is the cover lol. While I prefer Jackson's version, the Eagles did it well and it's just...a little different.

I think the Eagles conquered "Midnight Flyer" over the Osborne Brothers.

I don't like the Zac Brown Band at all, but they covered Elton John's "Harmony" very well.

Burton Cummings covered BTO's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" and I would have said it was better except he had to throw in a vocal interlude of what I can only assume is him wringing the neck of a duck. I had to edit that out and replace the song in my library with my edited mp3.

On a final note, Raffi covered Octopus's Garden just a few years before I was born. I grew up with that version for 10 to 15 years before I heard the original by the Beatles. Objectively speaking the Beatles did the better version but I'll fight anyone who agrees with that

Don't need to hear the original to compare, got that one in the memory banks from the good old 60's.

Paul Mac must have also felt the string quartet sounded weak at first. The final version was recorded with a double string quartet, 8 instruments. Why didn't George Martin just overdub the first quartet recordings? IDK, maybe he did.

I had to hear the Streetwalk version twice and maybe need a few more times to get a true sense of it.
Question - is the drummer also the lead singer? Just the way he hits the cymbals where a wedding has BEEN!
He seems to be more impatient or frustrated rather than sad for the lonely people .As Paul would say, "Where's the Love?"
Their sound is refreshing in a garage band sort of way, thanks for the link. They could do a rocking rendition of Helter Skelter or Hey Bulldog, I'm sure.

Rick Wakeman on keyboards and David Paton on classical guitar take Eleanor to another level. In this instrumental version they conveys all the Paul Mc emotions thru their instruments, well done.

Dave Mason, who played on the Jimi recording, did a great version. Mason's AATWT cover was made as a tribute to his buddy Jimi. It's on the 1974 "Dave Mason" LP.

Speaking of Santana, many people do not realize that his version of "Oye Como Va" is a cover. It was originally done by Tito Puente in 1962.

Santana formed his Santana Blues Band in 1966, so nominally early in the San Francisco scene. But when they playedat a Family Dog concert in 1967, Chet Helms told them they'd get no where with the latin influence. Which is apparently why they "suddenltpy" appear in 1969, an album andWoodstock. The latter because Bill Graham was helping , and wanted his act on the bill. He was managing them.
