Trini Lopez had that song in his repertoire before the Ventures did. You can find it on Apple music.
The Ventures toured with him in the mid 60's, and obviously liked the melody. Trini passed away in 2020 from the virus, was still performing and living with his wife in Dallas.
Perfidia or perfidy means betrayal. I won't speculate about that, it's just a traditional Mexican song.

Yes, I remember the news of his passing with sadness. We lost a few fine performers. Here's a 1941 version... https://youtu.be/OUFFLkN1tW4

The Ventures version was released in November, 1960, debuting at #33; Looking on the net, it seems the Trini Lopez version was on an album released in 1964. https://www.boomplay.com/songs/3841648

Thanks, Richard. Shows you can't just recreate history here. The statement about Trini's repertoire could be true. He was performing folk songs in both English and Spanish for years before he landed the recording contract and got airplay with "If I Had a Hammer". The idea that the Ventures learned the song during their 1964 or 5 tour was patently false, a pure fabrication from a festering mind.
