Hi, I have the opportunity to buy a 1957 Zenith Z3008R with the space commander 400 remote... The seller says that the remote worked up until about a year ago, and the picture works, though the bottom of the picture on the screen is compressed. Anyway, I've only ever restored a 1953 Muntz TV, so I was wondering if anyone knew if this particular Zenith might be difficult to repair / restore, especially the remote control part of it.

Thanks.

Zeniths are the easiest to repair & find parts for. It would run rings around
the Muntz back in the day.
Just do things slowly a few parts at a time & one symptom at a time.
Sounds like you have a vert problem so start there..
Remote is the last thing. You can do a crude test by shaking a set of keys & see if it triggers it.
Let us know your progress.

The Space Commander remote control handset is entirely mechanical, and generally pretty reliable. Of course rubber mountings can fail from age, and metal parts fatigue and break. Luckily, those remotes are fairly easy to find. The receiver portion in the set is not very complicated, but it does use motors and relays which can get stuck or sluggish. There's an article on the remote system in the March 1957 PF Reporter magazine.

Thank you both for the info. When I get the TV I will probably be back with more questions on getting it up and running well.

For the vertical problem, first try a new vertical output tube. Then, check the resistors and capacitors around the vertical output and oscillator stages. As old as that set is, it's going to need some recapping; back that far, even the remote receiver had tubes in it.
