Watched shango066's utube video on the Россия 303 recently, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCm0XVrYt2U. Fur giggles I looked on the fleabay and found one fur $20, offered $10 and it is in the mail as we speak! Shango066 had problems finding a schematic fur it but one is readily available on the interweb. Not sure why I got it, hope I don't become part of any investigation... In non-working condition, will post more about it when she gets up on the bench. Attachment:

But will it be able to receive English language stations?

I made a clean full size schematic with the transistor voltages if anyone ever needs it. Attachment:

This is more like a novelty radio made for Babaevskiy, the oldest Russian confectionery manufacturer (since 1804). For reference, there are a lot of information for portable transistor radios produced in the former СССР and Российской Федерации at this site: http://www.rw6ase.narod.ru/00/rp_p.htmlMore info for this particular model: http://www.rw6ase.narod.ru/00/rp_p1/rossija303.html

She came in the mail today! Powered it up and it actually works pretty well. The volume seemed kinda low so I started checking the electrolytics and holy macaroni, all but one were completely toast. The 100uF was the only one that was within reasonable specs. There was a 10uF that tested 13uF and 15 ESR. All the rest were zero capacitance. Amazingly it really didn't effect the radio with replacing them. Me thinks maybe a weak transistor somewhere or maybe it just isn't a very loud radio. Attachment:

Have you tried doing IF and RF alignments?

I did miss one electrolytic that is encased in an aluminum shielded box. It has a separate pcb board inside that you have to desolder from the big board to be able to get at the pins on the bottom. Shango066 had some difficulty resoldering an IF can he removed so I am a little leery of removing it. I might try clipping the can off and soldering directly to the original pins. I haven't been able to find the alignment instructions yet but I haven't translated all the documents yet.

what are the cups for? leakage containment? i had a old russian radio come in a long time back. all the caps were completely open. the sets owner went to a few shops. 3 told him that they cant get service info so they wont touch it. another said its useless anyhow as it wont tune modern english stations. had to laugh and write a ticket. so you will repair it? sure its no different in design than any other transistor set!

Decided to try to replace this cap. Took a skill knife and cut out the plastic shield thingy then took a dremmel with a diamont point tip and cut the leads. The old cap tested open. Took the new cap, wrapped the leads around a piece of wire and carefully soldered it in the. Noise on the radio seemed to improve, very quiet and clear but I don't think the volume is as it should be. Read a Russian forum on them and one comment said how this thing boomed. If I am up to it tonight, will follow the signal path with my signal tracer and see if we find anything... Attachment:

The type of variable capacitance tuner normally used has two gangs, with a trimmer capacitor for each one. Adjusting the one on the antenna gang at 1400 Kc usually increases the gain and volume level. I can't tell from the pics what type of tuner they use on this set though.

if you touch the center (wiper) of the volume control do you get a loud hum?

Another interesting thing I noticed. Before the recap on the DC power supply, it drew a steady 7mA. After the recap, it bounces between 7-14mA. One of the manuals says it draws 10mA max. Would a flaky transistor draw excessive bouncy current like this?

Ya... the longer the radio is on , the current steadily rises. It is up to 30mA after about 5 minutes.

low gain in the amp. problem is from the detector towards the speaker. look for a leaky transistor since the current is high. tbone8 wrote: kc8adu wrote: if you touch the center (wiper) of the volume control do you get a loud hum? No hum, no noise just barely a click. What does that diagnose?

Regarding the electrolytic capacitors in Soviet made radios, it has been my experience too that they are almost all open (or nearly so). The capacitors the Soviets used must have been poorly made, as most Japanese and US made 1970's capacitors are still usable, though not really trustworthy IMO (especially the filter capacitors on anything AC powered).
