The usual culprits are the four Electrolyic caps. At the very least, the small value connected to the VC wiper.

I suspect the IFs in these radios are not aging well. I have a P-955A of approx same vintage, has weak reception. Recapping didn't help but alignment made some improvement, still mostly deaf on distant signals.
