I recently found this real nice Royal 40 on Ebay. The circuitry looks to be original except for the battery tabs, which some appear to be replaced. A previous owner did a real good job with it. I always thought these were considered brown, but the "C" color code actually stands for charcoal, so now I know! It plays great across the band, with excellent sensitivity and audio typical for this model.
Both electrolytics have the same date code of 12th week of 1963. I'm not sure if this model was continued into 1964 or not, if anyone knows for sure please comment. Other colors were turquoise and white. The white version is not seen that often. Not sure whether to recap or not. The alignment is fine as is.

Hey ZR,

Same chassis as the Royal 50 with a less-expensive cabinet and "cosmetics". Have the 50K and it has the typical Zenith very good performance.

I have a question for those more familiar with Zenith radio timelines than I am.

I noticed that the chassis in the OP's R40 uses "offshore style" color coded IF transformers and different style transistors than the pictured R50. I could be wrong on the IF transformer origin, but I'm not used to seeing those style transformers in US made Zenith radios.

I assume that both were still assembled here in Chicago at that time, but does this mark a transition time for Zenith -- first beginning with the use of some off-shore components, before transitioning to off-shore production of small portables such as these just a few years later?

- Jim

Hey Jim,

Didn't notice that the first time !

If ZR's radio was made in '63, that would be the earliest I've seen the Asian IFT's & oscillator coil used. Believe my 50K was built in '62...

According to my Bunis Guide, that would be correct, John. His 40 was listed as being made in 1963 only.

Now to contribute to the confusion, LOL, I have a Royal 20, which has stamped on the bottom of the back as having been manufactured in Chicago. I previously had another, which had been stamped as having come from Hong Kong, so apparently Zenith was not restricting themselves to only domestic production.

And yes, it works great on the two watch battery cells.
