Hello All,
This beautiful RCA 1-T-4E was one of the seven radios recently purchased from another ARF member. It was in very nice original condition other than damage to one of the phenolic battery tubes and corrosion on bottom contact insert. The electrolytic and paper caps had already been replaced at some point in time. Applied power and it performed pretty well, but the audio was distorted. Since it was so clean as received, was thinking about just detailing small areas which did show a bit of dirt & debris, but decided it would be easier to completely disassemble and detail-clean all cosmetics as I usually do. Did replace the 10 uF AGC cap again since I couldn't tell its age, but left the other two newer replacements. The distortion turned out to be a bad 2N408 transistor in the push-pull audio output stage and fortunately had a couple nearly perfectly matched replacements in an Emerson 911 Eldorado which had an open interstage transformer. Performance very good after alignment, but audio, even though now very clear on stronger signals, not that great with weaker signals like my 1-T-4H and a few other sets in collection having a bit of a "gravelly" sound.
I think this is the best looking cabinet design of the entire series using same/similar chassis and am glad to add this beauty to collection.
Below are the project pictures---please "click" on images for larger view ! The final picture includes my 1T4H which isn't in as good of cosmetic condition...
