my FM is broken on my Montgomery ward airline GEN1678A. but the am works perfectly i had recently changed the paper capacitors and was wondering why it does not work. And it did not work before I changed the paper caps. Plus I also swapped all of the tubes with known working ones. If anyone that owns a this one or a very similar one that knows how to fix this please let me know!

Are the switch contacts for the FM broken?

I tested continuity and all of them seem to be intact this model has a FM sub chassis maybe there is something wrong in there im not quite sure maybe the contacts are dirty

You do have a decent FM antenna (dipole) attached, right?

Possibilities beyond failed tube or cap: failed coil/transformer in the FM tuner, IF transformer, or discriminator circuits. These elements have no bearing on AM operation so a failure there would kill FM but allow AM to work fine.

Fault isolation may require the use of a signal generator and oscilloscope.

so changed the electrolytics and well still nothing but as I turn the switch the speaker makes a popping sound and then the radio goes dead but the tube still are conducting :? also i cracked the fm sub chassis open and nothing was bad so im wagering on a bad resistor or something -64

That still sounds like a bad connection somewhere. Check all your solder joints, including the tube sockets.

so i checked continuity and i still cannot find the issue this thing is kind of stumping me out! also i went over the main connections on the point to point terminals but still nothing. What else could possibly be wrong? also might i add i checked all of the tubes and there good.

the next thing im thinking that there is a off value resistor that is bleeding power off causing this undesired operation. So im going to check them all and see if any are bad. And then go from there i will check the tubes once again just to see if something is intermittent the switch appears fine. I will check the contacts again to see I may have missed something im not sure but this unit has a FM sub chassis and the "goodies" inside look good. The slug inside moves fine I just think its weird that the FM is broken but the AM works like its new. :(
