I Have started restoration on this zenith 39a that I picked up in Austin tx a week ago, this is my 2nd one that I own. The first one I still have and get complements every time a quest sees it. Truly a beautiful designed radio. I will post pictures of cabinet progress as I go along. I really have no room to keep this large radio in my collection and will probably sell it when it is finished, all electrical will be done also, all dried out wires will be replaced along with what ever else it needs to play safely.

Judging from my Zenith 53, the finish on your radio should be shellac. A good through cleaning, wipe down with Min-wax "Special Walnut" stain but un-stirred, just the dye oil. That penetrated and colored the scratches and leaves a sealer film of tung oil, then touch up scratches with white shellac, on q-tip, thinned 50%. A final, light French polish. I took a clean muslin cloth free of loose threads dampened with alcohol and wiped the legs, very briskly, not enough to make the shellac sticky but enough to make just the very surface to flow. Came up smooth, shiny, hard dry in 30 minutes. The interior was cleaned and wiped with the stain in the same manner as the outside.

Note all old furniture wax must be removed, use turpentine or mineral spirits. Avoid soap products, they will leave calcium stearate and magnesium stearate. Any wax residue will make the shellac refreshing turn cloudy.

Nothing to loose trying preservation rather than a strip...

GL

I don't use shellac on any of my radios, I appreciate your input on how I should refinish my radio . The finish is to far gone to refresh using your method.

Finished up the 39a cabinet inside and out, looks beautiful now and will proceed with replacing all that deteriorated rubber wiring that is all to common on this sets. I found a #24 stamped on rear of cabinet wondering if that's the 24th cabinet made on the assembly line or something else? . This is my second 39a restore will have to make room in my console room for this beast, probably sell this one at some point. Just don't have the room but I mite add that Sargent is having an auction soon and may unload some of my other radios that I've had for awhile then I will have the room. I have a zenith 12s370 under going a restore and a 6s127,a majestic 1250, a AK 509w that will come home at some point. Have to finish 4 other customers radios first. This zenith 39a just don't show up for sale to often so I drove to Austin Tx to buy it and now I can say it was worth the trip, just look at it. That's eye candy to me.

All The wires in the power supply were crumbling and had time Sunday to replace them and to start getting chassis ready so I can get this going and finished.

Looks amazing! I love the tone as it is very close to original, and wow is that top a perfect mirror finish. Probably better than when it came out of the factory.

When you are ready to come refinish my two 39a radios, please let me know, I'll get you a room setup to stay a few days. :)

Thanks for the offer, cant right now I'm in process of refinishing a 16a63 stratosphere and a Rare ebony McMurdo cabinet. I have tons of work over here and can only work on radios during the weekend. I have full time job in a auto body paint shop right now. This is my second 39athat I own, the back screen cover is missing on this one, there is one on eBay that I'm wanting to get to complete this cabinet. The electrical is being done to chassis next. How many of these sets do you think were made, and I'm guessing not to many are left, Probably a uncommon set?

I don't think too many are left, but I'm still surprised how many seem to pop up each year. I think it's because they are so large and heavy that family members do not have a place for them when a loved one passes away.

Too many of them are also turned into liquor cabinets and such. :(

I assume to get a perfect finish like you have done, it requires professional sprayers like the ones at your body shop? And how many hours do you think you invested in it?

Again, great job, looks amazing.

I spent about 20 hours or so on the cabinet, it had some issues other than just refinishing, some areas had veneer lifting on the edges which I had to re glue, the legs were loose in some spots and had to re glue and secure. Its now very solid, yes you should use a spray gun on the sealer and clear coat to insure a smooth finish. It doesn't have to be a high dollar spray gun, knowing how to adjust the spray gun and mixing your lacquer clear coats, Appling the clear . There are many factors to over come and much practice spraying . Prepping the surface is most important to insure a beautiful result.

I'm back, the zenith 39a is finally working. Now there is two of these behemoths in working and restored condition in my home and I must be smoking something because I'm thinking of buying a bigger zenith 40a radio. I will have to unload some consoles if I decide on doing that. I'm going to sell some radios anyhow because I'm going to remodel 2 car garage where there are 65 radios sitting, this zenith 39a sure is a good looking piece. I would have be sorry if I financed one of these in 1929 right before the stock market crash. I heard of these sets selling for hundreds of dollars when they were new. I know you guys out there have one of these 39a,s , lets see them.
