I picked up this Arvin Rhythm Maid at Kutztown - it was more or less a prearranged deal. A friend knew I was looking for one to go with my other two Arvins, the King and the Baby, and I was quite pleased to get it, despite some major cabinet issues. Other than some veneer missing on the curved top of the cabinet the radio is in pretty good condition and the original grille cloth can be cleaned and re-used. The three speaker bars are there, and aside from a mess of pumpkin seed shells and a few other shells in the bottom of the cabinet it is fairly clean and the chassis has had minimal work done on it.

But the damaged veneer couldn't be in a worse spot, top front on the curve. There is the regular walnut veneer and then the other veneer that is also damaged and missing. I'm not sure what the smaller veneer is called and I am going through my used veneer box to find something like it.

This is going to test my veneering skills to the maximum and may show up some major shortcomings in that department. This is a very big tombstone, the size of a Zenith Walton, and has a beautiful design and dial. I hope I can do it justice. There was an earlier posting on restoring a Rhythm Maid and I think it may be of some use in helping me. Stay tuned!

You mar want to consider reveneering the top/front with new center section and the two outer bands. Just my 2 cents worth. I'm anxious to see how it looks when you're done!

Bob,

I have been playing around with veneer and patched in four places on the top/front. The regular veneer more toward the center and the banded veneer on the sides, and have used some old veneer from a donor cabinet. I have a little more work to do on it before I stain it and fill the grain, and then some detailing to hide the grain mis-match. I am not sure how this is going to turn out, but we'll see.

I would probably have extended the patch down to the dial area to prevent the straight cut across the grain. That will be hard to hide.

I would have replaced the all of it, no patching on that one, that rare set deserves the best.

Here it is Joe. I had to test my veneering skills also. And my toning skills to get rid of that original bland looking radio cabinet.
