I just received a Free Motorola Console, Model SKR150W Circa 1962-63.

It is very solid, and with the exception of being dirty and uncared for it should only need a recap and a lot of cleaning.

I started with Goop on one of the lids just to see how it would respond to the "Treatment". It certainly cleaned it up, but the already damaged finish just flaked off. In the pictures below you can see various before and after pictures of the condition of the Console.

What would be the best way to restore this Console?

Continue "the Treatment" use Howards restore a finish?
Strip with Lacquer thinner and restain and refinish?
Tung oil? or some other coating?

Also, what are these 60's consoles generally finished with?

Thanks for the help!
Marc

Just an update,

after letting the lid sit for a day or two to let the gojo evaporate completely, this is what the lid looks like.

Guess its time to break out the lacquer thinner and rags.

My question is what were 60's consoles finished with, and what will make it look best....

Looks like it was finished in lacquer , it needs a total strip and refinish, stained and cleared in lacquer.
