Here in the UK spring packs come up in the big stores (Aldi, Lidel etc). 200 pieces for not much money.

Looking inside I see springs that look similar to yours. These are 8mm inside diam and 20mm long. Most springs can be stretched, cut and modified of course and if you cant get another original it might be better to fit 2 new ones.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found some in the local hardware store, but they are too strong. I found some reasonably stiff wire for picture hanging, so I'm going to try to wind my own spring.

Have you thought of heating the hardware store springs and allowing them to cool slowly? Obviously you wouldn't go to red hot else they would have no spring at all but could of course be re-tempered. Take a little trial and error but maybe you can find a temperature that gives what you need.
