Hi All, I have a radio and the veneer is starting to lift in certain areas. Does anyone have any advice to fix or do I need to remove it all. Thanks

Syringe filled with wood glue, you'll never see the hole.

I just go to the drug store [pharmacy] and tell them what I am going to do, and I need a syringe.. I ask for a large one so I can get the glue in.. I use titebond glue and dilute it with water, so I can suck it up the needle. You just can't get the glue in the syringe if it is not diluted. Find an area where you can insert the needle so the glue will get to the areas where the veneer has lifted, and inject the glue. You may have to inject the glue in several areas. After the glue is injected, flatted the veneer with some weights and wipe up any glue that squirts out. I always get some flat plywood or something flat to press down on the area that has lifted, after it is glued. Get all the stuff you need before you actually do the gluing, and do a dry run with the clamps, so you know where to clamp beforehand. Use wax paper between the veneer, and the flat plywood so if any glue seeps through, it won't glue the plywood to the veneer. If you can't use weights then clamp the plywood down. If you have more than one section that has lifted then just do one area that you can handle. after it is done, do another area. I hope this helps. Dan in Calgary

Your photo seems to show more than just a couple of bubbles (unless I am seeing it wrong). While the preceding posts are correct about using glue filled syringes to repair bubbles, I think you are past that. To me it looks like a re-veneer job.
cheers

They are readily available at Tractor Supply stores. decojoe67 wrote: RFEngineer wrote: Syringe filled with wood glue, you'll never see the hole. I've always heard of using syringes, but where in the world would you get one? I would imagine they're not easy to get for obvious reasons.

chaz wrote: John, you might be correct. I had a Marconi that was quite bad, and I managed to get it to flatten out pretty good. It is almost like you have to see the actual cabinet, to really decide what can be done. It also depends in your cabinet skills. Here are a couple of photos of my Marconi 138 before and after. You can see the small ripples in the after photos, but I believe it was better than trying to redo the whole front with new veneer. Most people put a doily on the top of the radio It also depends on how much like factory you want to end up with. I just try give any information, I hope will be useful to the members here Dan in Calgary Dan, That's a lovely job on the Marconi ! Yes, we'd have to see the whole top of the cabinet to be sure. Like you, I have glued down bubbles and I keep the Lee Valley syringes in my tool kit, and .... if I was faced with a waterfall burl veneer like on the Marconi (and that is just gorgeous veneer!) I think I'd be trying to save it too. cheers

Make sure they say luer lock, so the needle twists on, and stays on... Be careful tho, is a good way to stab yourself, and possibly cause serious harm....
