I need one of the ribs from a donor cabinet to make her whole again! I can't post an ad until I know the model number. What model is this? Can't seem to find any pics on the net without a model number. Is the back original?
Thanks, Steve

1937 Detrola model 148E

It looks like the original (fragile) ply speaker grille bars have been replaced, or it was a factory improvement?

Dennis may know?

The heavier ones look good and should be easy for a woodworker to recreate one.

If you are unable to make one, remove the remaining one on the right/hand side. It should come-away by rocking back and forth. Mail it out, or take it to a woodshop... :)

Greg,
I would have to doubt they're a replacement. Just an old radio back then. Making what looks like steam bent bars, is no easy task. I just looked harder at that photo page and there another is! A 148E on the second row of pics, right side of my screen! I hope to find an original, before having to make one. I've sent an email to Dennis, hoping he has an answer.

If you are competent with a router, and you know how to spin a radius with a trammel, it wouldn't be too difficult to make a bench former (jig) for bending layers of birch ply - glued on top of each other.

My local guy can supply thicknesses of 0.4mm / 0.8mm / 1.2mm / 1.5mm / 2mm

Sorry I don't want to hijack this thread. I have this exact same radio, I've asked a few members in the past and never got a response. Mine has a replacement speaker and it sounds terrible and is not correct (yes, it has been re-capped). I know they used a Rola. Did they use, this identical speaker in any other Detrola models ? so I can keep my eyes open for one, or at least ask in the classifieds. I asked a few years ago, again, no response. I have a few Detrolas and the speakers are much larger. Yes,...your back is original, mine has one.
Bad form I know, sorry, carry on.

oh... If you ask in the Electrical/Mechanical Repair and Restoration forum, someone may advise you on a suitable replacement.

Greg, I currently have 2 Detrola D724's. This is where things get STRANGE. The speakers in the D724's are 8" speakers. The 148 radio has a 6" speaker in there now. It is not original, there is no way a 8" speaker will fit in that location. The speaker mounting holes do not accommodate a 8" speaker. There is an original cardboard "backing" where the speaker goes (stapled in) and it has a 6" cutout. So,.....the schematic is in error as to the correct model of speaker used in the 148. Just to add, it looks like the model 147E is push-pull output using dual 42's and the 148 only uses a single 43 driver tube.

Well, the radio arrived safe and sound! I have someone in the hobby who will be making me new ribs and then the cabinet will be off for a refinish. I also will be replacing the screws for the back. it has modern Phillips head screws with gold zinc plating on them. I'm guessing slot head screws with a dark finish on them will be right. Luckily for me, I do business with a plating company, so that'll be an easy fix, once I get the screws. Will post a thread, once restoration starts.

You might want to check on the phillips screw question. They were in very common industrial use for about 10 years already by the time this set was made.

Maybe Tony F can help with what his has???

The reason I suspect they are not original, is that they are zinc dichromate plated. Not a common occurrence in Radioland, in 1937, I have to believe.

Here is an original screw. It measures 1/8" wide by 1/2" long. It is slotted and dark brown . I'd imagine if there is any "slop" or wear in your original holes you might want to go with 5/8".
