They just keep coming, another zenith tombstone model 5-s-29 with an old nasty finish that's needs to be removed and replaced with a fresh lacquer finish. Stay tuned for this tombstone makeover.

Hi Fred,

Looks like another beauty on the way.

Before you go to far...
For the "original finish" view, I don't see the three characters above the band switch. As I recall there should be a gold A, B, and C.

Tim

There was ABC on there, as I got to see them as I put thinner on cabinet when stripping. I will apply the decals before I add the clear coat. Thanks for paying attention.

Little more work done today, grain filled and sanded smooth, also inside the grill edges are now painted black, not much to look at from last pics. ready for some color. Should have it wrapped up this weekend.

Cant believe this the same radio but it is, under all that worn out finish is some very nice looking wood veneers. Got about 6 or so hours involved in this one well worth the effort and time to get this nice zenith lookin like it should. Sure will be a looker when everything is put together. Maybe the owner can post it here on this thread when its completed.

Fred, you truly are a master at what you do. I can't thank-you enough for posting the various stages of a refinish. I have a question about the stage when you put on the grain filler and have sanded it off. It doesn't show it in this thread, but some of the other threads you can see where you have sanded the filler off and are left with a covering of dust, before you blow it off. Do you use "tack rags" ? You are clearly using a pneumatic hand sander with i guess 240 grit paper. Are you in fact getting down to "new wood" on the veneer ? I know with a power sander it must be quite difficult to actually prevent from sanding through the "original" patina of the veneer. I know even sanding by hand, you can get various areas where you can sand through the patina and into the underlining "UN-oxidized" veneer. So, in my thinking, this would leave kid of a blotchy some new exposed veneer and some not. Unless you sand the entire area to make the oxidized wood disappear. Does the wiping stain make this effect disappear ? I've never used a power sander to remove grain filler, always by hand. With most veneers being so thin, I would hate to "sand through". You must use extremely light pressure, just to speed up the process at this stage.
When radios were originally produced, they would have had new veneer, so there would seem to to be 2 schools of thought going on in refinishing. 1- try to keep the original "patina" of the wood, or 2- not being afraid of sanding through the "patina" and getting down to "fresh" veneer which technically with new toners and refinish would make the finish look "brighter & cleaner" like it was when it left the factory.
Tony

Decals are now on cabinet. To answer the question on grain filler, when you sand the filler off with air ( DA) sander yes you have to be very careful not to sand thru the thin layer of veneer, I lightly sand the veneer after stripping, then blow all the dust out of pores in the wood then fill with grain filler, re sand then blow off again. Use a tack rag then stain and tone the cabinet the way you want then seal and clear. There are many ways to refinish furniture and antique radios. My method seems to work good for me, the end result is what counts. I use all Mohawk products except for grain filler which is made by Timbermate.

Original aged A B C stencil. Versus decal on Freds excellent refinish.

Fred this is not meant as a criticism. I think this was originally done with a rubber stamp.

I wish the decals looked more like the originals.
