Hi All,

This RCA radiola had a crack on the top. Look like the case is bakelite (not plastic). Is there any simple way to patch and make this crack disappear but still keep its original color.

If there is no simple way to do it, can I just glue the crack, slightly sand the whole case and spray a new brown paint like the original one?

That's really about the only way to conceal it. I've done it several times myself, but limited sanding to just the sealed crack area, and then used primer before the finish coat. If you use a rattle can, get it from an auto supply store, as their nozzles are better than those at the hardware stores.

It also gives you a chance to get creative with a two tone paint job. Here's one of mine.

I like to keep the original brown color. What primer and finish coat would you suggest?

While you’re at the auto parts store, you might consider picking up some Fiberglass resin and Fiberglass cloth to reinforce the crack/cabinet on the inside surface. Very easy to do. It will provide more strength in addition to what the glue provides. Just follow the instructions.

Just go to the auto parts store, find the closest color, and also ask for a spray can of primer.

Auto body Bondo works well with Bakelite. Glazing compound is sold in a tube like toothpaste, dries hard and sandable.

That crack looks like it is spread. I recently did some Bakelite gluing with Weldbond glue, similar to TiteBond. It holds well, and locks to the Bakelite. There is plenty of time for positioning and clean up, which I like, but the joint needs to be clamped.

A strip of cloth soaked in white glue can be laid over the crack on the inside if you don't work well with fiberglass resin.
