That's really about the only way to conceal it. I've done it several times myself, but limited sanding to just the sealed crack area, and then used primer before the finish coat. If you use a rattle can, get it from an auto supply store, as their nozzles are better than those at the hardware stores.
It also gives you a chance to get creative with a two tone paint job. Here's one of mine.
