I need advice on refinishing this Majestic 1A50A. The chassis is completely overhauled down to the base chassis, reassembled and works great.
The top of the cabinet was broken away but when someone re-glued it they didn't get fixtured together, now I will need to completely remove, clean out the glue and re glue. The grill bars are loose and can be removed for separate finish, then re-glued.
The front and sides I plan on lightly fine steel whole as to not remove any labels or the false inlay at the top edge.
But the top is a disaster and needs to be completely redone. Top left has some wood missing but since this is in the painted black area, easy to repair.
My question is type of refinish, glossy or satin ?. Somewhere on this forum some stated radios from this era were almost always done in gloss. I was leaning toward a semigloss so the few nicks and scratches wouldn't show.
Pictures in a few secs to follow

Here is a link to Radio Daze for new decals

http://www.radiodaze.com/decals-40/
I would take off the bars and strip the whole cabinet , including the bars.
Stain the whole cabinet with dark walnut stain
Then mask it off and do the top and top edge and bottom edge with Mohawk extra dark walnut
toned lacquer. Also do the bars with the same toner.
Reassemble the bars and now your ready for the coats of what ever sheen you like.
After a coat or two of the finished lacquer apply the new decal. Then give it more coats of lacquer,
the decal will not rub off.

Those knobs are off a late 40s early 50s RCA TV. You may want to look for a more correct set.

I was guessing the knobs were incorrect since these are plastic.
CHAZ, thanks for the great info.
