I got this zenith early this year and now found some time to get going on it. The label says 15u270 but from what I've been reading there was two versions one being the more common walnut and the rarer version was mahogany. The wood on this radio cabinet sure looks to me like mahogany although label says other wise. The red hew or color of the wood and the open pores and the pattern sure looks to me to be Mahogany. So as I'm re veneering the top and side I went with African Mahogany . Even when sanding smooth after stripping there is red tint to the wood. I cant tell if zenith penciled in a number one over the zero to save on label's , label is pretty worn. This radio had suffered from water damage at one point and the sub straight was replaced as well on the sides and front bottom footer molding. So now I have the bottom all re glued and veneered. Today I will flip over and place new African mahogany on the top. One big problem I'm having is where in the hell are the feet. The feet got lost at the previous owners storage and he says he has them somewhere in a box but yet has not located them so to be ahead of he game if any of you guys now of some feet for this relic please let me know. I don't have the correct speaker set up or the original chassis, so I'm going to stuff in a 15u269 chassis and speaker. I was not going to let this cabinet go to the dump. I know finding the correct speakers and chassis would be almost impossibly but you never know maybe some day. One thing that's good is the grill and the upper front, sides, and shoulders, the veneer is tight as a bark on a tree. I was going to sell this radio as is and my wife found out and said no no no. I want you to restore this radio, in the meantime some one wanted to buy the radio as is just for the grill and I had to back out of that deal and he was not happy. Any body that wants to chime in on finding correct parts please do so.

Ok I have been hard at it and cabinet is done except for the feet. Joe the Zenithman gave me this radio cabinet as a trade for some work I've done for him he says he has the feet some where in a box at his house but cant find them as of yet. I sure hope he finds them other wise I will have to resort to something else I hope not. I put an ad on this forum looking to but a set if any one has them. The cabinet really turned out nice with a semi satin finish, the mahogany veneer was installed on the sides and top and matches well. You can really see the red tint to the mahogany veneer. I did not stain with mahogany stain I used something else not to get it too red, I do not like much red in my radio cabinets. The cloth is not correct, you cant get the original pattern any more so this will do. I don't have the original chassis or speakers so I'm going to stuff it with a 15u269 chassis and speaker. Don't think ill ever find a true 12u271 set up. So I will do the best I can with what I have, main thing is this cabinet is a survivor now and will live on. New speaker board was made and will work nicely. Cabinet is solid now and will be proudly presented in my collection when completed. Thanks for looking, any questions are welcome, lot of lookers but no one has responded as of yet and many other post ive done latly no responders, I guess no one likes me anymore. :(

Beautiful. I like the satin finish. It's not in your face shiny, yet has a mild sheen. Good choice on the grill cloth also.

Beautiful work as always. Don't be disappointed at the lack of responses. I think most people are not surprised anymore at the quality and quantity of your craft. Now that you can literally work from home like that. I know myself I am drooling (truly stunning) at the photo's of the restorations. The forum would be not the same without you. I am delighted that you post the amount you do. Keep 'em coming I say.

What system are you using to keep down the dust buildup. In your pics its always so dust-free looking.

Keep work area clean, air blow cabinet off real good and use a tack cloth on cabinet before you start spraying. Lacquer is very forgiving because it skins over very fast not allowing dust to stick. Clean your spray gun good after each use, tack off cabinet and wet sand any dirt nibs off before next coat of clear coat is applied. Keep air pressure down while spraying, you don't need a lot of air pressure coming out of the gun while spraying lacquer. If your spaying out side don't do it when its windy. That's about it.

I have been getting grill cloth from Richmond designs and Radio Daze, even at some radio auctions you can find grill cloth to bid on. eBay you can find some good stuff. Fabric stores you mite run across something that will work but not likely.

That cabinet is looking great Fred.
Those long-reach vise grip clamps are invaluable for some jobs.

Remember to run the exhaust fan for a while after spraying before firing up that fatty.

Fred.... that is great work. I'm a long-time woodworker and took up restoring antique furniture several years ago. I got turned onto antique radios in 2018. I really admire your craftsmanship! These old radios are awesome. If you're like me, it's hard to describe the satisfaction I get when I finally get the lay down the first coat out of the gun and see all that beautiful wood come to life. My small collection is slowly growing and I'm always on the lookout for inspiration. I'm smack in the middle of a Stewart Warner R-146 tabletop. that has several small veneer pieces missing. Color matching the original mahogany is proving to be quite a challenge. Please keep posting photos of your work. I'll keep watching..... You have a new admirer.

Fred,
Another beauty! Don't get discouraged by the lack of responses. I always look at this board to see what you're currently working on. You've done three for me now, and I couldn't be happier. As soon as I have time I'll get the next two cabinets to you. Hopefully, after the holidays.

Merry Christmas!!
Steve

Really great to have such a beautiful restoration here on our Forum. It's an inspiration to start on something even if it's just a plain wood AA5. Have yourself a Merry Christmas Fred.

Well i am as far as I can go with the zenith, in the process of figuring out what to do with getting some feet . If I dont find some original feet I will be forced to put something else on there. Cabinet looks great and the chassis as well, plays real nice. Has been recapped, new dial belts etc.. The electric motor that runs the automatic tuning dial doesn't go in reverse, I cleaned the terminals and checked to see if making contact and they do but still wont back up. I guess I will have to put back on bench and take a better look at it. Motor runs fine but not in reverse, must be a dead spot on contact somewhere.
