I wanting to make my restoration of my zenith 15u270 as nice as possible and in doing so I'm getting the chassis to look as nice as I can and preform as nice as i can. Many times the dial scales are messed up in some way and this one was no acception. It was scraped, rusted a little and just did not look good. The decals are available at radio daze. This is not the first one, I have done several already. They can be a little difficult to put on and get straight but well worth the time. I will show some pictures of my process, first you have to strip off old paint, sand smooth, spray on primer, spray on black lacqer paint, apply decal, apply decal set solution, clear coat 3 or 4 times, tinted in between clear coats to give the lettering an aged (PITINA) look instead of pure white. That's it, lots of steps but now you have a perfect aged looking dial scale.

File comment: Notice right half I used solvaset to melt down the decal into the paint. Its helps a lot but you don't have to use it. Better if you do use it. Left side you notice whitish haze where I didn't use solfast, right side you don't the haze. This also helps decal stick down tight so u don't blow decal off when clearing coating over decal.

File comment: Finished, 3 coats of lacqer satin clear with a light in between mist of antique gold lacquer to give some patina and to match the other dial scales.

File comment: Yes I know America is messed up. If this was customer's I would have to fix it.

Thanks Fred for showing that. Never had to do it and hope I wont. My one and only Zenith has a good black dial. It does have a veneer problem on one shoulder. Now if only you were nearer :D

A small imperfection in the decal lends to the credibility of the patina.

How about starting with this one?
Got the new decals from Rock Sea Enterprises years ago.

WOW. I always enjoy reading through your projects. " A mist of antique gold for aging."
What a novel idea.
