Here's another hard to find , this is a Motorola 6T which is probably the best design Motorola had to offer at the time , they hit a home run with this model, that's what I've read.. Ive never seen one in person until now, they must be scarce as a hens tooth. This poor thing had some veneer missing and was coming off from moister damage. If you see one that's fixed up they sure look nice with a big fancy dial with double lit dial windows . So what I'm going to do is install some nice African Mahogany veneer on the entire top and front . That's what was on it before was mahogany veneer. The sides of cabinet are just plain poplar. But that's ok we will make her look beautiful again.

File comment: Grain filler a must especially on Mahogany. I grain fill all my radio cabinets. If yo don't it will look like a corn cob.

Well it looks good as usual. Seems to me it has had new veneer put over the old. Its used to be said to never do that as the plys would be unbalanced. Having had lifting when I tried it with better glues is that now myth buted?

thanks Gary

Masterfully done! That's a real deco beauty. I especially like the tone and smoothness of the painted trim. That's often where a refinisher misses the mark.

I had one and still miss it. Mine was missing 2 of the grill bars and half the top had been jaggedly cracked off of the side... knowing that work was beyond me I resold it. The dial and band switching is among the more interesting/satisfying I know of.

Beautiful job as always Fred. Can you share with us what stain and toner colors you used to achieve this finish? Thanks Mike McKenzie

Medium dark walnut stain over the new Mahogany veneer then sprayed light golden oak toner over that The trim is extra dark walnut and bottom trim is black. I use that combination quite a bit. If I used mahogany stain over the mahogany it would look way to red which I do not like, that's with using mohawk, other products may look different . I use Mohawk only I don't mix and match products , not good to do that.

Fred: thanks as always for the quick responses. I would have sworn that you had used some different colors based upon what I saw in the photos. I have read every one of your posts on the Forum and really appreciate and admire all that you do. Thanks for passing along your knowledge. Regards. Mike

These things have a great 3 piece dial. I had one of these with good original finish and let it go, regrettably :|

That whole line was exceptionally nice, with the 6T, 6Y, 9A, 9R, 9Y, 10Y, and 12Y.

Especially the 9R, a favorite I hope to find some day. A great year for Motorola.

Beautiful work, Fred!

Customer sent me a picture of the Motorola 6t that I had refinished the cabinet earlier in the month. All put back together now and looks outstanding.

All three of the ones you just posted are drop dead gorgeous!! You have really been an inspiration to me to be able to better tackle the wood refinishing end of things. Thanks for all the time advancing my education. Mike McKenzie
