Some home study courses used rebadged commercial kits (such as Bell & Howell provided Heathkit), while others designed their own. Some equipment could be very basic, designed more to train the student than remain useful on the graduate's bench or in the field. Schematics and circuit info might be limited to what was covered in the course itself.
In the case of NRI, their Conar line of gear was sold separately to the public without the training course.
DeVry Technical Institute dates to 1953, begun in 1931 as De Forest Training. They're still around today.
