I am restoring a Philco Beam of Light phonograph with an HR-1 record cutter/recorder. It's the Model 41-608 radio/phono.

Aside from working to get the changer to work correctly, I need to know the following:

1. Where do you connect a microphone? Nothing I can find specifically shows me where to connect it. It think it connects to the extra terminal on the black external transformer (see photo).

2. What type of record blanks should I use to make recordings? Are PVC or polycarbonate okay? Also, I learned that the old blanks had a hole that engaged with the tab on the platter to keep the blank from slipping as it was being cut. I guess I could drill a hole in each blank to get such a hole. I don't want to buy NOS blanks if possible.

Gib at WestTech has rebuilt the pickup and cutter cartridges, so they should work.

Can anyone who has experience with this unit help me with the microphone hookup and a source for record blanks that will work with this cutter?

Thanks!

The microphone attaches under the player where the pickup connection goes.

Where exactly does the microphone connect? It's not clear in the photo which wires go to the microphone, and the drawing does not indicate the microphone connections, only the phono pickup tone arm connections (unless I'm missing something}.

The drawing appears to show something connected to the extra bayonet terminal of the black transformer box in the upper left, but whatever that connection is, the information is cut off in the drawing that was posted. I'm curious as to what that terminal is for.

Incidentally, someone suggested that the unknown bayonet terminal on the black transformer box might be for a #47 bulb, but that terminal is too small to fit a #47 bulb. I tried.

My speaker/Mic has 2 wires at the end. They should go to the 2 screws under the player. I have no way to check right now. All of my BOL's are packed behind a lot of stuff in my shop.
I have a friend who may be able to get photos..

Someone from another forum sent me this photo of the Philco mic and the connector which shows that the mic does connect onto the bayonet connector on the black transformer box as I suspected.

However, I still need advice on buying new (not NOS) record blanks.

Kirk- You must have a different type of mic. I have heard that a speaker can be used too.

Ok!
Thanks to a friend I can confirm your thoughts. My speaker must be missing the end piece.
The mic/speaker does go into the black box.

As for records.....
I have always used NOS blanks. You can get 10 packs on eBay. Good strong 2 mil thick 10" records.

Thanks for the final verification on the mic connection.

Regarding the blanks you are recommending, those are the ones that I was thinking of using. I think they are new ones. The guy selling them also has a website with different sizes and he says they are new.

Is your experience that PVC blanks work fine with the HR-1 cutter, and the Beam of Light tonearm doesn't chew up the PVC records? The tracking of the Beam of Light tonearm is on the heavy side so I am concerned that it will rapidly wear out any recorded PVC records if they are played too much. Your experience/thoughts?

I usually use NOS so I am not 100% sure. Ask the seller if the record can handle a heavy recording arm. Weigh it for accuracy and you will have to figure out the slipping issue if there is one.

He doesnt have to be familiar. He should know the max pressure for proper cutting.

Good luck..

I contacted Ryan at Recordblanks.com and provided him with the following info on the HR-1 and Beam of Light tonearm:

Cutter arm/cartridge tracks at 35.5 grams
Playback tone arm tracks at 25 grams

Here is what he said: "Based on all that information you should be able to cut my blanks. My blanks work great with steel and tungsten styluses. That sounds like an awesome machine you have! Also softening my blanks with a heat lamp and turtle wax always helps!"

That takes care of my two questions.

Thanks to everyone who responded and hopefully this will serve as guide to others restoring a Philco Beam of Light.

Now I just need to get the changer mechanism to fully cycle!
