I am refurbing an RCA 9-W-51 console. The 45 record player was missing so I replaced it with an RP-190. I overhauled the motor board including new idler, cam thingy, cleaned lubed etc. Even thou the motor was supposedly brand new I took it apart and cleaned and lubed it. The unit plays well but after about 20 minutes the motor gets to hot to touch? After a couple of days of this I changed out the motor with another that was cleaned/lubed. Same thing about 20 minutes or so and the motor is too hot to touch. Is this normal or do I have something else going on here?
Thanks for your time.

I've never met a 50's or 60's phono motor that didn't burn the heck out of me after it had been running for 15-20 minutes. I'd say that's normal.

Probably doesn't help that the voltage is 10-15 volts higher nowadays.

Blast tks good to know. Sucks being an rp-190 motor lol
Eric thats probably a good point. I put a CL-90 in all my radios maybe i should try knocking the voltage down a bit in the rp-190. Do you think that would affect the speed of the turn table if you reduced it down to around 115v?

Let it be. Don’t ever reduce voltage to an induction motor — it will make it run hotter and could burn it out. It’s normal to run hot because of the inefficiency of the shaded-pole design.

Well I discovered one reason for the heat. I had my variac at max voltage 130 vac. Oops! Must have bumped it at some point. So I dialed it down to 115v and have been running records for over an hour now and the motor is just warm to the touch. Back to what it was designed for so things should be good. Tks for every ones feedback.
