Finally, like really bad movies some receivers are so bad that they are interesting and the American Electrola DXC-100 fits that category

Nice little collection there. The Truetone and Universal would be the oldest radios, after the pushbutton table model.

Another T/O "wannabe" from my collection. A Wards Airline portable. AM/FM/LW and three SW bands going up to 22 Mc. The red light when switched on, is a tuning aid that dims as the station is tuned in. Cannot find any information on this one. Anyone seen one of these before ?? Well built set. Uses 6 "D" cells. Model # GEN 1477B. Jim L.

I had one a few years ago but gave it to a friend who wanted just one portable multiband radio to take camping. As I recall, it sounded decent and performed better than most wannabes. Sams lists it in TSM-86 under "Wards". Dave

Nice radios michaeljpro. My cousin had one of the GE radios about 1962. If I remember, it took one of the cylindrical 9 volt batteries, about the size of a C cell. I don't think they're available anymore. However, I think there's enough room to fit in a rectangular one. Ken

Uhmm... I guess I need to round up all the xstor radios I have around the place; never though of them as a "collection" Just off the top of my head.... A couple of Zenith TO, a 1000 and a 3000, assorted mid-70s portables (I think about 6 or 7). Does an ICOM -R-7000 count? One of these days I'll round them all up for a photo-op And here is my latest "rescue" : GE 7-2945A

michaeljpro wrote: here are my latest finds. Got them at the Lansing "Extravaganza" meet on Friday http://www.flickr.com/photos/transistor ... otostream/............ Good finds Michael. I just noticed that you posted this with the picture of your Trancel: ".....Other than a chip on the upper right corner ( which I will repair)......." I've done a lot of work with wood and some with Bakelite, but hardly any with the type of plastic that case is made of. It would be very helpful if you could post pictures and tips on how to repair these transistor cases. I'm sure it would be of interest to many others as well. Thanks!

Not really a high quality radio, but interesting just the same..... I picked it up at a church sale for a few peanuts surpisingly it went! A good cleanup, replaced the electro's and it worked even better! Sounds good, wooden cabinet sprayed with a green background and a cream "paint splatter" over the top. Surprisingly it has an RF stage and a tendency to oscillate at the top end of the band (AM BC only!) if you tweak everything for max smoke. I can find no info on it, It's made by "Ultimate-Ekco" Ltd of Waihi and I've never seen another like it, but..... ...there's this..... It has exactly the same chassis as the Ekco above. Bought from our local Auction Site for a similarly small number of peanuts. The only difference is the green one has a bakelite holder for 6 "D" cells, whereas the red one has a fitting for the big 9volt batteries that cost a small fortune - $22NZ! Wooden case again that had got damp and needed regluing at the corners and the grill cloth replaced. Exactly the same perfomance as the green one but marked "Ultimate Explorer 8" - yes, it has eight transistors. If anyone has any info, it would be gratefully received.

Nice pickups, Marty! The green one is especially deco looking, as if it came right out of the '50's, lol.
AFA the power source for the red one, your most economical means, assuming it has the larger snap connectors, is to get a connector pad from perhaps a spent large battery, solder leads to it, and then connect the other ends to a modern small nine volt battery connector. I've done that for some of my Emerson "Magic Wand" full size portables, that actually had connectors for two of the larger batteries, but run quite well with just one small nine volt cell. That way they can be operated with readily available and relatively cheap power, while not modifying the original connectors.

Thanks Dave - I cheated and downloaded a battery scan and made up a box which neatly fits a holder for 6 "AA" cells. Not strictly kosher but it looks OK!
