I don't know if this qualifies, but new to me?
I recently was introduced to Jazz. I started working at a local health food store any my 20 something manager was a real Jazz Fan. I have been an audiophile for many years. We traded! He introduced me to Jazz & I introduced him to HiFi. Now I listen to a lot of Jazz and he is listening to his Jazz on a good system. Win Win

Lots of fine acoustic guitar by Norman Blake and others, Randy Scruggs, Larry Perkins, and Johnny's way of making the songs his own. Covers of U2, Tom Petty, Niel Diamond, and traditional folk. I just looked it up and that album is 18 years old, so not very "New". If you like Norman Blake, he backs up Robert Plant and Alison Krauss on an album called Raising Sand. That one is also quite special. Rocky Burnet produced and plays some of the guitar parts.

I'm 49, and I find that my musical interests went to about the mid 2000's (alternative rock) and then stopped. Screaming lyrics became all the rage, and that's hardly musical to me.
I'm primarily a rock guy, but I do enjoy classic 78's from the 40's era--I enjoy a good foxtrot.

i'm a music nut and i guess you can say i'm in that "wont listen to new music" rut.
my musical taste run from bigband to hiphop. this whole thing about 40 somethings not listening to new music does have an explanation. any kid with a laptop and a couple grand of gear is now a music producer. the freedom is great for low budget artists but its also flooded the music scene with crap.
i think i find 2-5 new songs a year i actually really enjoy. the music scene here in miami is all about reggaetton (shoot me in the ears and pour salt on the wounds please) and bachata which is a form of latin grownup music that makes me feel like i'm on an eternal carousel ride at a mexican fleamarket. the radiostations obviously dont help as all they play is the top 10 for weeks on end before adding a new song.
what's left for us? the web has thousands of new artists but do i really want to wade through hours and hours of mediocre music? not really.

So, I guess the answer is…. very few of us listen to new music. And everyone else is quite vocal that they won't listen to new music -Steve

Personally, I simply gave up on pop culture -records, flicks, TV shows, personalities- in the '70's. AFA music, I'm comfortable with the '40's - '70's period.

I get most of the new music I listen to from younger people, namely my children and grand children. They DO take the time to wade through all the crap (which, admittedly, is a lot) and dig out the gems. They also appreciate older music, BTW. Another source for new music for me is internet streaming. The internet is great because if you hear something you like the song name, band, and often the record label is right there. http://somafm.com/This streaming site has been a favorite of mine for many years. They have numerous 'stations' that play vastly different kinds of music, all commercial free, though they do have occasional spots asking for donations to keep them running. I am a monthly contributor. My favorite station would probably be 'Secret Agent', though the one with the new music is called 'Indy Pop Rocks'. 'Poptron' also plays new music, but it's often a little much for me. For fans of new (or 'alternative') rock music there is 'Bagel Radio'. Good new stuff, and some classics. I also like their 'Left Coast 70's' station, which plays soft album rock from the 70's. I often play that around the BBQ in the evenings. For mood music I play 'Def Con Radio', 'Black Rock FM', or 'Lush'. 'Illinois Street Lounge' plays old school lounge music from the 50's and 60's. 'Boot Liquor' plays some of the best country and western I've ever heard. I play 'Suburbs of Goa' on occasion, but usually come away feeling like I've just listened to the same song for three hours. They even have a station called 'Mission Control' which is old NASA mission radio dialogue set to music. No kidding. Enjoy.

I'm 40 too. I find that part of the issue, is new music is really produced for and marketed to young people. Music doesn't exist in a vacuum, it's part of a scene, it's a sound track to people's lives, and it addresses the feelings and issues of a generation.
The music which spoke to us when we were growing up, is indelibly imprinted in our memories. I find it hard to listen to new music, without it reminding me that I'm not really a part of that new scene, it's a reminder that time moves on, and we aren't young forever. Older music has the opposite effect. It's the same reason I don't walk into night clubs full of first year college students, and try to fit in.
I find it's a lot easier to go backwards, and try and get a sense of what was going on in the past, than it is to tap into what a younger generation is doing. Mostly because younger people are trying to find their own place in the world, and part of it involves being different from older people. It's the same reason my teenage daughter rolls her eyes if I try and use the slang from her generation.
