I've been looking for that model Philco, one of the first of the wave of luggage portables in late '38, but this one is just a tad more than I expected to spend!

Most interesting, and not mentioned in the listing, is the notation on the top that it is to Paul from the make up gang on The Man in the Iron Mask 1939.

If you look that up on the IMDB, Paul Stanhope was the make up director on that film so this must have been a gift to him from his crew.

Fascinating piece of history, not fascinating enough for me to part with $1000, but fascinating nonetheless.

I agree. Being it was a really innovative set at the time using the new low-current tubes, it was quite a nice gift. More than a radio though, it's a piece of Hollywood history. It will surely appeal to that type of collector first.

It's not just signed by the crew. Look at the front left side and bottom--from the ones I can make out:
Louis Hayward
Joan Bennett
Warren William
Albert Dekker
Joseph Schildkraut
Alan Hale, Jr. (the skipper on Gilligan's Island)
Alan Hale (his dad)
Bert Roach
Peter Cushing (this was his first movie ever! What a great signature he had.)

Those are the stars and some of the supporting cast of the movie.

One thing you don't see much these days is cursive writing. Most of the autographs are beautifully written.

I like that it has Joan Bennet's signature. She's one of my favorite actresses (The Woman in The Window, The Scar). William Bendix signed his very simply and he used his nickname "Bill".

He'd have better luck getting $1000 if it had belonged to a well known Director instead of the Makeup man, and from a movie that was more significant.
