I have a radio I am working on that has been stored for two months. When I opened it up it has a moldy smell. It is a Zenith R 520 portable. Is there something I can put in it or on it to keep the smell away. It is stored in the garage but this is southern Calif and I am in a dry area. I do not want to add something inside that would corrode the inner works. Thanks Tom

Get a box of Baking Soda, pour it into a dish, and place both that and the radio in a large plastic bag, seal it, and leave it for a few days.

I just went thru this with an EH Scott Philharmonic that had nasty mold on the wires and smelled really bad. I left it out in the sun for several days, then cleaned the wires down and it is not bad at all now. Fresh air and sunshine.

It is on its first day of sunshine and will progress to either the baking soda or the vinegar treatment This might be it first sunshine it has seen in many years. I need to take the chassis out any way so it will get the vinegar treatment, I will leave no stone unturned. After its royal spa and beauty treatment I may create a R-520 throne to reign from. All my other TOs will have to pledge allegiance. I am still looking for accessories for it. I got the original manual reproduced to fit into the pocket. It is spiraled bound instead of glued together. I am extremely happy with the manual. I may have the plate that the four power plugs fit on that is screwed into the top above the chassis. I will have a hard time finding any of the power adapters or battery connectors though. I have a few years to find them. Maybe at a radio swap meet they will show up. Tom

Make sure any plastic like dials, etc. are covered or protected from the sun. Hot sun can warp old plastic.

Will vinegar penetrate through the covering and kill the spores living in the glue? I've got a Scott 800 in a custom parchment (not paper, but real parchment as in leather skin) cabinet that stinks terribly.
