Found this when cleaning out the other day - a Sylvania "Add-Ears" kit for Color CRTs. Band, Ears, Instructions, and an Interchangeability Matrix for using Sylvania replacement CRTs. Might come in handy for some here.

The "band" is about 16 feet of steel banding, 1/2" wide, with notches to engage the actual clamping mechanism, which is just like most replacement radiator hose clamps, with helical grab. The ears have a 1x1" CRT corner "contact" area, and about 1.5X1.5" perforated ear. Handy if you had a stock of older CRTs and wanted to use them in the newer sets with eared-CRTs.

Instructions:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ONR6z ... IYSIbjlPGl

Interchangeability Matrix:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ApwC8 ... LKXYHNQY8i

Sylvania/Philips ECG Kit part number is EK1 for those that might want to search for one on eBay or the web.

This reminds me of years ago when a local Motorola dealer cut the strap off of a replacement crt to make it fit into a customers color set. The tube imploded in the customers home.

I was just going to say not to try that!

A lot of non-banded tubes mounted to chassis or cabinet with adjustable bands, and that is perfectly safe (adding a band with light tension to a non-banded CRT).

But the other way around removing a fixed tension factory band from a CRT tends to result in implosion.

The cutting of a pre-banded CRT made me cringe.

I never had one implode on me, but I handled them as if it could.

The only implosion I ever experienced was a 27 inch CRT (A68ACT00X) I threw in the dumpster.
I noticed it was fully intact, so i took a spud-bar and struck the face... FOOM! Glass was raining down...

Dumb... just dumb...

Some here might remember replacing the crappy 23EGP22 CRTs in Motorola color sets with a 25AP22 using the Motorola kit of bands and ears. The OEM 23EGP22s dropped like flies after the first year or so, and 25AP22 rebuilds were about $35 versus a Motorola price of $72 for the 23EGP22. Even with the band kit from Motorola, you came out about $25 bucks ahead, and the 25AP22 would last a lot longer.

Those Motorola band kits dried up in the era of Matsushita's buyout of Motorola/Quasar.

I was trying to remember about the early crt failure of the 23 inch sets from Motorola. We did a few way back then. I wonder if the Motorola dealer I referred to was trying to not use the kit which is why he cut the band off of a crt. I do remember we sold Admiral tv that also used that 23 inch crt. Failed under warranty and the Admiral supplied rebuild crt's were just horrible! We couldn't get them to track worth a darn.

i have 2 vdc rebuilt 23egp22 on hand.got em as a last chance warehouse cleanout.
dead stock they wanted gone.almost free.
this paid off as i have 2 regulars who own the sets.
had 4 now down to 2.
never did get a band kit to run 25a/23v in those sets.
not sure how it was done as the 25a would not sit in the bezel.
i suspect the kit has a new bezel.
good luck finding one today!

Motorola kit. Never have opened the envelopes, but it feels like brackets in them.

One of the techs I used to work with also fixed sets at home.
He removed the band to put on another CRT that didn't have ears and the CRT imploded in his living room.
He just got minor cuts and several months of vacuuming the glass out of the carpet. He was darned lucky not to lose an eye.
