I'm working on a Westmore 501 tube tester (this is the same as a Triplett 3444), and the meter is open. Options would be to find a used. original meter or get this meter repaired or replace with a digital meter. So...

Does anyone know where I might get this repaired?

Does anyone sell digital meters for the 3444?

I'd gladly buy a good used meter, but I doubt if anyone has one. If you do, please respond.

Hi Jim!!

Don't know if this will do you any good. Ram Meter in Detroit is still in business. They are a Simpson meter dealer and might be able to either fix (if they have the parts) or custom build a replacement if you have all the specs. Google will give you the phone numbers. I have used them in the past and they are good people.

I have this style of meter, but not sure if the movement is correct - you'd have to take it apart and swap faceplates. What's the movement on it?

I looked at my notes from years ago and I had the meter spec's jotted down as 200uA, 500 ohms and 100mV for full scale. Problem is I'm not sure if I got it from someone, measured it in a working unit or computed it. This just may add confusion, but something to compare with others that might have spec's. For a replacement they need more than just the 200uA that Triplett provided.

So far the suggestions are really helpful.

Bill, assuming you are correct, can I have a coil installed that will allow for a higher current? Would the tester work with a 500uA 100mV full scale meter?

No the meter full scale current cannot be over 200uA and a more sensitive meter would have to be shunted.

Jim...When I get time in the next day or two I will give you a setup to make sure my numbers are correct. In the meantime someone else may come along and do the same or know for sure the spec's. Bill

Hi Jim
I think the spec’s I gave you are correct, so lets check it out on your 3444.
You will need:
10K resistor of 10 watts or more can be series or parallel exact resistance not necessary.
500 ohm any wattage, but resistance needs to be very close.
2 Digital multimeters. DMM 1 and DMM 2.

Set your 3444 up to test a 6L6 tube.
Connect the 10k resistor between pins 3 of the octal sockett (Caution there will be 240 volts on 3).
Connect the other end of the 10k resistor to DMM 1 set to read 200 mA
Connect the other end lead of DMM 1 to pin 8 of the octal socket.

Connect the 500 ohm resistor to one of the wires removed from the analog meter.
Connect the other end of the 500 ohm resistor to a DMM 2 lead set to read 200 uA.
Connect the other lead of the DMM 2 to the other lead removed from the analog meter.

Make sure everything is in place and safe.
Power on the 3444 and the meters.

Follow the Triplett instructions to check plate current set Range Switch 50 mA.

DMM 1 should be indicating appx 25 mA which would be half of the 50 mA full scale analog meter.
DMM 2 should be indicating appx. 100 uA which would be half of what the 200 uA analog meter is actually reading with the balance of current through the shunt resistor.

Hopefully this works out as normally I can hide my mistakes here at home, but don’t worry the worst that can happen is my spec’s are wrong and I’m embarrassed. Good luck, Bill

The 501 and 3444 use a 200ua meter part number 52-1353. The 3444A uses a 50ua meter part number 52-3914

That's correct, but you need more information on the spec's to replace it with anything other than the original. Knowing just the current is like having 1 leg on a 3 legged stool.

I just got off the phone with RAM Meter in Michigan. They were nice, but said they cannot repair it "since parts are no longer available".

Thanks for confirming the specs Bill. Thanks DM for the part number.

Mark D, what would your meter cost?

OK. Just got off the phone with Triplett

They recommended I try a company called Mobile instrument that used to specialize in Triplett equipment (they do much more high tech stuff now)

Shipping the meter tomorrow. Crossing my fingers.

Sometimes you can use some of the older style Simpson uA movement and pad them up with resistors to get the same sensitivity and meter resistance as the original, There are a number of retrofits for different tube testers. I have some 25 uA and 100 uA meters that I was going to use on AVO tube testers. Depending on your meter size, needle length and swing, I probably would look at some of the NOS Simpson meters if they cannot repair your meter.
Example of a 50uA movement
