Good morning all,

Just last night I acquired what I believe is a Capehart Deluxe 4002 Tv, radio and phonograph.

The unit turns on, but no picture or static just a hum that builds to a deafening hum coming from the main speaker.

I am debating on turning the unit into a fish tank/bar but don’t want to destroy a terrific piece of history if the problem isn’t that horrible to fix.

I have very little electronics experience fyi and none with vacuum tubes.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!
Please, no fishtank or bar! Anything but that!!

There are plenty of people here that can help you, not me so much except with general information because I'm in Australia and not as familiar with US TVs as I am with Australian ones....
There are plenty of restoration stories and lots of advice on this site.

One of those is: Do Not power up old electronics without making various checks first, you may damage something irreplaceable. Google "Dim Bulb Tester" for a start.

Vintage TVs are GREAT for watching old movies and TV shows.

You will need to test the CRT first though.

I am in Dayton OH if anyone is close by and has advice or can take a look. I also would much rather restore it if possible as I am a history teacher and keeping these things around is great, but if it is too far gone or just wayyyyy too expensive to do so....

If you have never restored any tube electronics before, a TV is not a good beginner's project. This article has more advice on the topic:

Since you're in Ohio, there should be people in the area capable of doing the restoration work for you. Note that a full electronic restoration is a labor-intensive job, involving the replacement of many components (chiefly, capacitors). There's no standard price guide for such work, but at a reasonable hourly rate I would expect it to cost a few hundred dollars, minimum.

If you are determined to do the TV restoration yourself, I recommend that you start by restoring a simple five-tube radio for practice. If that easy project succeeds, you would feel more confident about tackling the complex TV/radio/phono project. Here are couple more articles with basic info about restoration:

What Phil said. I would start by fixing a separate table radio, then do the radio/phono part of the Capeheart then the TV. Some makes had the audio amp and radio built into and partially reliant on the TV. So depending on the degree of integration between the TV and radio in that Capeheart fixing the radio could be tied into fixing the TV in ways that make it much less straight forward than a TV only or radio only unit.

Well I found someone locally who is gonna do some work on it. They guarantee they can get the radio and phono working and will see about the tv but say they are unable to test the tube so they’ll repair the rest and see if it comes on lol.

Your radio repair friend will be able to use this method to test the CRT:

If it IS bad, you live in Dayton Ohio, right? That's just over a 1 hour drive to Hilliard, and that's where the ETF is! Old TV nirvana!
