Someone here was working on some repro AK thumb nuts and I can't remember who. The last time he posted on it he wrote the form tool he had made wasn't right and he was going to have another one made. I was wondering what if any progress had been made.

I assume you mean the big ones, and not the ones for the posts?

That was me, right. There were 'interruptions' in the plans for getting the form tool re-done. This is currently a back-burner project, sorry.

Was thinking about this today, does not seem hard to do if you have a metal lathe, tap, and the knurl tool. Now if you had a CNC lathe it would be easy.

All of the above - which includes the special convex knurling tool. Trouble is the form of the thumbnut is quite particular and AK did those with a form tool, which the correct, and fastest way. Basically I'll need to get a quote for the form tool, which involves sending the vendor a .dxf file for them to do the wire EDM job.

Is there any major difference (other than the con--- knurling) between the AK nuts and the brass knurled thumbnuts sold by the H Paulin hardware company? MOst hardware stores including Home Depot sell Paulin products.

As I recall, any 8-32 thumb nut will fit, but nothing currently available has anything close to the correct knurling.

I have also seen those thumb nuts on Chelsea radios as well, the only difference is they were nickel plated, and the knurl is a little thinner.

I've got these, these are new, obtained them a few years ago, they are a metric thread, close to a 8/32 pitch, their quite large....

Dan, aren't these the same nuts that were used on AK20 big box sets?

If there is interest in these, I'll post on the "for sale" forum. Finally got the form tool made. One on the right, is an original for comparison in the second photo.

Those look really nice, Jim. I don't need any at the moment, but those look like they could really be a benefit to the AK collectors.
